Pop Art Cube Table Lamp · Ceramic signal yellow · Space Age 1968–1972

Pop Art Cube Table Lamp · Ceramic signal yellow · Space Age 1968–1972

A cube of glossy signal-yellow glazed ceramic, four sides, five round openings with softly drawn-in edges – a compact 16.5 cm side length, yet with a presence that immediately adds a punch to any sideboard. When the light is switched on, the form begins to breathe: the opal white bulb inside casts even circles of light in all five directions, ring-shaped shadow echoes appear on the wall, and the saturated yellow glows warmly from within.

The glaze is dense, high-gloss, and impeccably evenly applied on all sides – a color between signal yellow and gold yellow that was part of the brand language of West German and North Italian studio ceramics in the late Pop Art phase around 1968 to 1972. The construction is solid, with rounded edges and fine press-mold marks on the inside, indicating series production in a ceramic factory of this era. Inside sits an E27 socket on a short base; the cream-colored cable exits at the bottom edge of the cube and leads to an original West German inline push-button switch made of ivory-colored hard plastic, whose patina confirms the lamp's age.

The piece has no bottom mark, and therein lies the charm of its classification. The vocabulary – Pop Art geometry, Op Art play of light through the perforated sides, monochromatic signal color as the sole design element – points to the environment of the West German ceramic stronghold Höhr-Grenzhausen and its proximity to designers like Cari Zalloni for Steuler, whose "Continua" and "Facette" series speak the same language of anti-hierarchical cubic volumes. North Italian manufacturers in Lombardy also produced comparable cube and sphere lamps in these years, and without an additional paper label, the exact workshop remains unknown. What remains is the temporal and aesthetic placement within the immediate vicinity of this movement.

On a console table in the hallway, next to the record player, or as an accent among book spines, the lamp reveals its dual nature: a sculptural object by day, a light source with a soft diffusing effect by night. Collectors of Space Age lighting and Pop Art ceramics will find a rare format here – most comparable pieces are vases or candlesticks; fully electrified cube lamps of this era are significantly rarer. The condition is very good, with no chips, hairline cracks, or glaze damage; the original wiring is functional but should be inspected by an electrician before continuous operation.
