Wolfgang Posse Silver Etching, Abstract Figurative Composition, Signed 1991

This small original work is by the Nuremberg painter Wolfgang Posse (1933–2017) and is signed and dated „W. Posse 91“ in pencil below the image. The composition shows a figure fanned out in a cubist manner, its head and upper body emerging from diagonal bands of colour and faceted planes. Ochre, gold, rust orange, burgundy and aubergine dominate the picture, interspersed with muted sage green and occasional blue-grey accents. The colours are layered as translucent glazes and in many places allow a metallic, shimmering ground to show through, giving the picture its warm, golden depth.

Wolfgang Posse was born in 1933 in Böhringen, Saxony, trained as a decorative painter and attended the gilders' school in Waldheim before studying stage design and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1953 to 1960. From 1960 he worked as a freelance artist in Nuremberg, from 1972 to 2012 in Tennenlohe and finally in Igensdorf. He became known above all for the technique of silver etching, which only a few artists still mastered: in a lengthy working process he applied pure, translucent glazes onto a silver ground. This work, too, is executed as a silver etching. His paintings can be found in churches, hospitals, corporate collections and private ownership.

The image measures 11 x 15.5 cm and is float-mounted on a white mat with a terracotta inner edge, the dark wooden frame with gold inner moulding measures 23.5 x 29 cm. The work is in good vintage condition. The edges of the sheet are slightly irregular, one lower corner shows a fine scratch with minimal paint loss, and the frame shows light, age-related signs of wear. The back of the frame is sealed with paper tape and fitted with a hanging loop. A small, concentrated original for a study, hallway or salon-style gallery wall that adds a warm, golden note to mid-century and vintage interiors.
