Vintage Magazine Rack, Chromed Metal & Faux Leather, Italy 1970s

Vintage chrome-plated metal magazine rack with two hanging black faux leather pockets, probably Italian in origin, 1960s/70s. The piece is 55 cm high (with handle), 41 cm wide and measures 21.5 cm deep at the feet.

A tall, rectangular carrying handle made of black lacquered wood crowns the frame made of round, high-gloss chrome-plated metal tubing. Two diagonally suspended faux leather pockets with a row of elongated, oval eyelets form the storage compartments for magazines, newspapers or illustrated books. The row of eyelets serves both as a graphic perforated pattern and as a suspension on the central chrome bar, which separates the two compartments and stabilises the frame. The stand rests on four straight chrome tube legs with black plastic feet - all four are fully preserved.

The combination of polished chrome tubing, black faux leather and graphic, rectilinear design language is typical of Italian magazine racks of the late 1960s and 1970s. Comparable models made of chrome tubing and perforated faux leather can be found on the secondary market from manufacturers such as Mascagni or based on designs by Castelli Italia. The present piece does not bear a manufacturer's mark - the attribution therefore remains limited to the stylistic relationship with this genre of furniture.

The condition is good to very good: The chrome shines without rust or pitting, the black faux leather is completely intact without cracks, all four plastic feet are present and undamaged. A decorative and functional piece of mid-century design for side tables, sofa corners or reading chairs.
