Sunburst Mirror, Gold Lacquered Wood, Convex Glass, Ø 24.5 cm, 1960s

Sunburst Mirror, Gold Lacquered Wood, Convex Glass, Ø 24.5 cm, 1960s

Small sunburst mirror from the 1960s with a frame of gold lacquered wood. Two layers of finely fluted rays of varying length with rounded tips radiate from a raised central ring decorated with bead and egg-and-dart mouldings; the grooves are picked out in a darker tone, giving the flat piece a lively, sculptural quality. At its centre sits a domed mirror glass, a so-called convex or witch's mirror, which reflects the room in a wide, miniature view.

Sunburst and starburst mirrors of this kind were made in the 1950s and 1960s mainly in France, Belgium, Italy and Spain, combining the vocabulary of mid-century design with the decorative glamour of Hollywood Regency. There is no maker's or workshop mark, so the attribution is limited to style and period. The back is closed with a cover and has a central hanging loop. Its small size makes the mirror well suited to a hallway, bathroom or guest room, or as an accent within a gallery wall.

The diameter is approx. 24.5 cm, the depth approx. 2 cm. The mirror is in very good condition, with only minor, age-appropriate signs of wear to the lacquer finish.
