Studio Pottery Vase, Bottle Form, Crater Glaze Green-Ochre, Vintage, 1960s/70s
Studio Pottery Vase, Bottle Form, Crater Glaze Green-Ochre, Vintage, 1960s/70s
Studio pottery vase in an organic, flattened bottle form, probably Western Europe, 1960s to 1970s. The hand-built, slightly asymmetrical body with gentle indentations in the wall carries a crater glaze in matte sage to olive green, whose fine pores, crackle lines and dark speckles create a lively, almost mineral surface. Towards the narrow, obliquely cut neck the glaze turns into a rich, running ochre brown with dark and violet flow marks that also lines the mouth.
Crater and volcanic glazes of this kind became popular from the late 1950s, above all through West German manufacturers; related glazes can be found at Ruscha or at the Dutch workshop Mobach. As these makers usually marked their work and the base of this vase bears neither mark nor signature, it is offered without attribution as Western European studio pottery. With its free form and the contrast of green and ochre, it works as a single piece as well as in a group with other studio ceramics in mid-century and vintage interiors.
The vase measures approx. 14 cm in height, 9 cm in width and 4 cm in depth. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs; irregularities in the glaze are inherent to the making process. VAT is not shown separately on this sale.
