Serving trolley in plastic-coated wire with tray, black, vintage, 50s/60s

Serving trolley in plastic-coated wire with tray, black, vintage, 50s/60s

Serving trolley in black metal wire with a removable tray, European manufacture from the 1950s to the 1960s. The frame is made of thin steel rod that is not simply painted but sheathed in a smooth black plastic coating, a technique familiar from String shelving and the Dutch wire furniture of those years, giving the metal a soft, deep sheen. The slightly splayed legs rise into a handle on each of the short sides and end in short sleeves fitted with four brass-coloured swivel castors. At the top, a rectangular tray with a warm, finely striped wood-grain finish sits within a double wire gallery; below are two wire racks with a raised back edge and V-shaped bent rods that hold bottles, magazines or records securely in place.

The graphic lines of thin wire, the open construction and the combination of black with a wood-grain surface are characteristic of post-war mid-century design and recall the wire furniture Tjerk Reijenga designed for Pilastro in the Netherlands. There is no maker's mark or label on this example, so we offer the trolley without attribution to a specific manufacturer. Its compact size makes it a small home bar beside a sofa or armchair, a tea trolley in the kitchen or dining room, or a rolling stand for plants, books or records.

The trolley measures approx. 61 cm in height, 47 cm in length and 31.5 cm in width. It is in good original condition: the plastic coating is intact and glossy with only a few small signs of age, the tray shows light surface marks, and the brass castors have a nice patina.
