Vintage rhino wooden figurine, hand-carved ebony, Africa, 33 cm, 1960s/70s
This hand-carved wooden figurine depicts an African rhinoceros in a powerful striding posture: the head is raised, the long front horn juts steeply upward, a smaller second horn sits behind it, and the ears are perked up attentively. The rhinoceros was carved from a solid block of dark, very dense hardwood, which, judging by the grain and the alternation between near-black heartwood and honey-colored sapwood sections, is African ebony. Pieces of this type were created in East African carving workshops during the 1960s and 70s and were widely brought to Europe at the time as travel souvenirs and decorative objects. There is no signature or origin label, which is why we deliberately do not name a specific workshop.
Particularly appealing is the vivid grain, which stretches across the flanks and shoulders in swirls and ribbons and shifts between deep brown and black on the silky, polished surface depending on the incidence of light. On the hindquarters and the curled tail, golden-brown sapwood zones emerge, making each piece unique. Skin folds on the neck and shoulders, the finely grooved muzzle, the eyes, and the toes on the feet are carefully crafted, giving the animal a naturalistic, almost living presence.
As an expressive focal point, the rhinoceros works well on a sideboard, mantelpiece, desk, or bookshelf and complements mid-century or vintage interiors just as well as contemporary decor featuring natural materials. The figurine measures 33 cm in length, 18 cm in height, and 10 cm in depth and is in good condition with fine drying cracks typical of wood on the head and back, as well as slight signs of wear commensurate with age.
