Solid Brass Elephant with Inset Eyes, Probably India, 33 cm, Mid-Century
Solid cast brass figure of an Asian elephant in a calm, walking pose. Characteristic of the species are the high, domed twin-lobed skull, the rounded back and the comparatively small ears, which here lie close to the head with folded edges. The figure bears no mark or signature. Naturalistic brass elephants with inset eyes were cast mainly in India around the middle of the 20th century and exported to Europe in large numbers, so origin and date should be understood as probable rather than certain.
The body is fully cast and, at 2.4 kg, very heavy for its size. Head, body and legs are softly modelled, shallow folds suggest the skin at the shoulders and flanks, and the sturdy feet are slightly set off at the lower edge. Small dark eyes are inset, and two short tusks project on either side of the trunk, which hangs down and curls forward at the tip. The tail hangs freely and thickens at the end. Small drilled holes in the soles of the feet may result from the casting process or from an earlier mounting on a base.
On a sideboard, bookshelf or desk, the elephant pairs well with mid-century furniture, teak and other brass objects. It measures 19.6 cm in height, 33 cm in length and 10 cm in depth and weighs 2.4 kg. It is in good condition. The brass shows a natural patina with darker areas in the recesses, fine scratches and small casting pores consistent with its age and method of manufacture.
