Ceramic pendant lamp with pierced decor, ochre yellow, probably Scandinavian, vintage, 60s/70s

Ceramic pendant lamp, probably Scandinavian, 1960s to 1970s. The wheel-thrown shade rises from a rounded, rolled collar through a gracefully flared body to a broad, gently curved rim. On the body the glaze runs in ochre yellow and olive with dense dark brown speckling, in which the throwing lines remain visible as fine horizontal rings, while collar and rim are glazed in a light cream tone with a faint greenish sheen. The pierced decor defines the piece: a row of small openings encircles the shade below the collar, and the rim carries two staggered rows of larger openings whose edges were pushed outwards when the still-damp clay was pierced, leaving rough, unglazed craters in warm terracotta tones.

When lit, light passes through every single opening, the crater rims glow warmly and a ring of light points forms around the lamp, while the wide lower opening casts a directed, glare-free light downwards. Form, glaze and piercing technique correspond to Scandinavian, particularly Danish, workshop ceramics of the period, from which comparable pendant lamps with perforated shades are known; no signature or maker's mark is known on this example, so we offer the lamp without attribution to a specific workshop. Above a dining table, a kitchen island or in a hallway it adds a warm, handcrafted accent and suits mid-century, Scandinavian and boho interiors alike.

The shade measures approx. 35 cm in diameter and approx. 24 cm in height; the overall height including the chain is approx. 175 cm, and the chain can be shortened if required. The lamp is in very good condition; slight irregularities in the glaze and crater rims are inherent to the making and part of its handcrafted character. It hangs from a dark metal chain with interwoven cable and a cream-white ceiling canopy and is fitted with an E27 socket; as with all vintage lamps, we recommend installation by a qualified electrician.
