Vallauris turquoise ceramic lamp, UFO shape with drip glaze, 1970s/80s

Hand-thrown studio ceramic table lamp from the French pottery region of Vallauris on the Côte d'Azur, created in the late 1970s to 1980s — the golden time frame in which the Vallauris workshops had finally established themselves as the center of French studio ceramics after the Picasso era. The lamp body is turned on the potter's wheel in a very elegant flat discus or UFO shape, made from a warm red chamotte clay, as traditionally used in the region south of Cannes. A matt turquoise-petrol colored flow glaze (émail bleu turquoise) runs over this body, flowing in light and darker streaks over the spherical curvature, condensing in some places to small crystal efflorescences and giving the entire surface its lively deep-water appearance. The short cylindrical collar neck still shows the fingerprints of the potter's hand and transitions into a darker petrol tone — a characteristic contrast that Vallauris studio works of this period often deliberately staged. With a base diameter of 25 cm, a shade diameter of 35 cm, and a total height of 32 cm, the lamp has the compact, wide format for a side table, sideboard, bedside table, or console — it is not a bulky floor lamp, but a luminous, sculptural solitaire that fits equally well into a modern or classic interior.

Very good vintage condition: no chips, no cracks, the glaze intact and preserved in its full deep turquoise effect. The unglazed base ring made of red chamotte clay shows the typical firing marks of the Vallauris kiln and supports the lamp stably. The electrics have already been renewed — modern E27 plastic socket and new cable. The large linen shade is new and has been color-matched to the turquoise glaze of the base: a warm, natural butter-beige that makes the turquoise of the ceramic glow when switched on. A collectible piece of Southern French studio ceramics, clearly bearing the signature of the Vallauris potters.
