Glass Bowl Uno Westerberg for Pukebergs Glasbruk, Ice Glass Technique, Sweden 1960s

Heavy, low glass bowl by Uno Westerberg for Pukebergs Glasbruk, made in Nybro in Sweden's Glass Kingdom, 1960s. Clear glass in a 35 cm wide and 13 cm high wave-rimmed form that is more landscape than vessel – the rim undulates in free hills and valleys, hand-folded in hot glass, with the characteristic pinch points at the wave crests. In daylight, the bowl appears almost colorless.

The real fascination lies in the surface: both the inner and outer walls are continuously structured using the ice glass technique – hot glass is dipped into cold water, and the resulting crack pattern is then melted down again. The result is a grainy, crater-like topography that refracts light into a thousand small reflections, making the bowl shimmer between an ice floe, a lunar surface, and old bark, depending on the lighting. A signature artisanal technique of Swedish glass, produced with high quality at Pukeberg between the late 1950s and early 1970s.

Uno Westerberg (1914–1985) began his career at Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Stockholm at the age of 21 and later became the artistic director of Pukebergs Glasbruk. One of his overlaid table lamps is part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; his Spectra series – bowls and vases made of clear to greenish-tinted glass with organic rims and structured surfaces – was particularly exported to the USA and is now considered one of Westerberg's most sought-after lines. This bowl formally and technically follows the Spectra signature.

Collector's item for a sideboard, library, coffee table, or display cabinet – solo as a sculptural object or filled with fruit, lemons, white stones, as a shallow water bowl with floating candles. A grand presentation for a subdued material, clear Swedish lines, very good vintage condition without rim chips or cracks.
