Tripod Table Lamp with Red Raffia Shade and Brass Ball Feet, 1950s
Tripod Table Lamp with Red Raffia Shade and Brass Ball Feet, 1950s
This table lamp from the 1950s brings together two typical motifs of its era: the delicate tripod base and the raffia lampshade. The oval, slightly egg-shaped shade is wound from red-dyed raffia strips guided around a frame of vertical wire ribs, with wrapped rings closing the form at top and bottom. It rests on three slender, white-lacquered metal legs ending in small brass balls. The combination of a warm natural material with a light, almost floating metal structure is characteristic of interior design during the post-war economic boom years.
When switched on, the light passes through the fine gaps in the weave and bathes the surroundings in a warm, reddish glow, while the structure of the shade is softly traced onto wall and table. There is no maker's mark or label. Tripod lamps with raffia shades were produced in the 1950s by numerous, mostly smaller lighting workshops, and the form, frame and execution of this lamp correspond to typical pieces of the period.
The lamp is 46 cm high and the shade has a diameter of 28 cm. It is in good to very good vintage condition with light, age-appropriate signs of use, and the raffia weave is well preserved apart from a few slightly protruding fibres. The lamp is in working order, is operated via an inline cord switch and takes an E14 bulb. On a bedside table, a sideboard or in a reading corner, it adds colour and cosy light to mid-century and vintage interiors.
