Pair of signed studio ceramic birds, luster glaze, 1970s
Pair of signed studio ceramic birds, luster glaze, 1970s
Two birds, close together, as on a silent winter morning—one crouched, its head drawn between its shoulders, the other upright, with its back wide open, almost like a small vessel for light. The glaze is a genuine luster glaze from reduction firing: deep slate-grey-blue in the shadowed areas, metallic bronze and coppery where the flame has touched the surface. Both birds are freely hand-built from one piece, their heads are small, deliberate accents, their beaks only hinted at—an archaic, almost prehistoric formal language reminiscent of Henry Moore or Mediterranean studio ceramics of the 1960s and 70s.
The larger bird measures 16.5 cm in height, 11 cm in width, and 12.5 cm in depth; the smaller one is 13 cm high, 9.5 cm wide, and 13 cm deep—together they weigh around 4 kg. Both bear an incised artist's signature on the underside (identical on both pieces, confirming their workshop affiliation as a pair) and an additional yellow inventory mark. As a set, they work well on a console, a dining table, or a low sideboard—two silent companions that instantly make any room feel older and calmer.
