Standing praying figure — signed studio pottery from the 1980s, bronze-colored glaze
A signed studio ceramic sculpture from the 1980s, realizing the classic motif of the standing, praying figure in a modern, abstract language. Two arms raised to the side and a small, slightly reclined head emerge from the flowing garment — the ancient Orans posture of early Christian art, here in a reduced and very expressive form. The height is 28.5 cm, the width 15 cm and the depth 14 cm.
The surface is rough, almost volcanically textured, with fine speckles and a metallic-bronze shimmer that changes between anthracite, olive green, and copper brown depending on the light. This effect is achieved through reduction firing, a technically demanding process in which oxygen is deliberately removed from the kiln. The hollow underside shows the unglazed, terracotta-colored shard and reveals the free-hand modeling. A signature by the artist is present, though a specific workshop cannot currently be assigned.
The figure is open to interpretation: from one angle, it's a solitary figure with outstretched arms; from another, the head and garment appear as two beings standing closely together. This ambiguity is typical of ambitious studio ceramics from the late 1970s and 1980s, which play with influences from Romanesque, early Christian, and modern sculpture. The piece may originate from a sacred context — the original description suggests a possible provenance from a church.
The sculpture is best displayed as a standalone object on a side table, console, bookshelf, or sideboard, ideally with a plain wall in the background. It fits well in modern, contemplative interiors, in artists' and collectors' homes, and in studio and gallery spaces. Condition: very good, with no visible restorations, and the beautiful age-appropriate patina that this type of glaze develops.
