Sommerso Art Vase Amber & Aubergine in the style of Josef Hospodka for Chribska, 1960s

Sculptural Sommerso art vase from the 1960s in the distinctive design language of Josef Hospodka, chief designer of Chribska Glassworks in the Bohemian Giant Mountains. The massive glass body features an amber-colored base that transitions upwards into a deep aubergine – both color layers are encased as Sommerso within a clear crystal jacket. The transition appears like rising color clouds in water, enclosed and permanently frozen by a clear crystal layer.

The rim, freely drawn from the hot glass with its wave-like extended wings – often referred to as "propeller shape" by collectors – is Hospodka's signature from the 1960s and makes each vase unique, as this "off-hand" technique never allows for two identical pieces. At 27.5 cm in height and 15.5 cm in diameter across the extended rim, it is a striking solitary piece for a sideboard, windowsill, or as a focal point on the dining table. Without a factory mark, as was typical for most Chribska studio pieces of this era; excellent original condition with no chips or scratches.
