Large Sölken Table Lamp, Brass Dome Shade with Fringe, Early Model, 1960s
A large, exceptionally decorative table lamp by Sölken Leuchten of Arnsberg in the Sauerland region, one of the traditional centres of the German lighting industry. A hemispherical brass dome shade carries a surrounding wreath of fine, cream-coloured fringe – a design language that quotes Art Nouveau while fully embracing the spirit of mid-century design. Below the curve, the shade is pierced all around by a row of framed light openings in a porthole look, and it is crowned by a stepped brass cap with a darkly patinated ball finial. The fluted column stem with profiled brass rings rests on a heavy, multi-stepped round brass base.
When switched on, the lamp creates a particularly atmospheric play of light: small points of light shine outward through the openings in the shade, while the fringe filters the main light downward softly and warmly, casting its shadow pattern onto table and wall. This is a very early model from Sölken's production. Founded in 1950, the family business Josef Sölken GmbH & Co. KG specialised in high-quality brass lighting and was already supplying major department store groups in the 1960s; this piece can be dated to the 1960s.
The lamp measures 57 cm in height with a shade diameter of 38 cm. It is in good vintage condition with a beautiful, age-appropriate patina on the brass, especially on the base and finial, and the fringe is complete and even. The lamp is in working order and is operated via an inline cord switch. A true eye-catcher for a sideboard, console or salon that lends mid-century and vintage interiors a warm, nostalgic glow, and a fine collector's piece of early German brass lighting.
