Brass Firewood Holder, Oltrarno Style, Florentine Craftsmanship, 1960s

Polished brass log holder in the characteristic design language of the Florentine Oltrarno workshops, made in Italy in the 1960s. Generous ring handle made of flat brass strip, set in a crescent-shaped trough of brass sheet, supported by four ball feet — an ambiguous construction that, when upright, acts as a sculptural crescent moon object in front of the fireplace, and when laid down, functions as a carrying basket with a ring handle for firewood, magazines or throws.

Striking details: spherical end caps where the handle is screwed to the trough, continuous high-gloss polish and the typical restrained, geometrically clear design of 1960s Italian Hollywood Regency. Solid material thickness, mechanical screw assembly instead of welding — hallmarks of artisanal workshop production. The piece has been polished, and the warm, shimmering brass tone is fully showcased.

Oltrarno — literally "beyond the Arno" — refers to the historic artisan quarter of Florence on the south bank, where the workshops of goldsmiths, frame makers, leather craftsmen, and metalworkers have been concentrated since the 15th century. The Florentine brass tradition continues there to this day in renowned manufacturers such as Il Bronzetto (since 1963, awarded "Storica Attività di Eccellenza Fiorentina" in 2024) and Pitti Mosaici. The term Oltrarno thus stands for a clearly identifiable tradition of quality and style in Italian brass processing.
