Murano Sommerso Bowl/Ashtray, Clover Shape, Green & Amber, 1960s/70s
This small, sculptural glass bowl made of hand-blown Murano glass showcases the classic Sommerso technique of Italian post-war modernism: multiple layers of color were melted together consecutively and encased in a thick, clear layer of glass. At its center, a warm amber/golden yellow glows, transitioning outwards into a rich bottle/emerald green.
The bowl features the organic trefoil or cloverleaf shape typical of Venetian Sommerso workshop pieces from the 1960s/70s: two edges taper into softly curved, pointed corners, while the third is shaped into a decorative, ring-rolled curl – a characteristic design detail of free-form Murano glassworks that gives the compact piece a particularly sculptural, dynamic silhouette. This combination of green and amber with a curled rim detail is typical of classic "Sommerso" ashtrays from the 1960s/70s.
Regarding Attribution: The piece bears no signature, paper label, or engraving. A definitive attribution to a specific glassblower or manufacturer is therefore not possible. The green/amber color combination with the trefoil shape and curled rim is widespread in Murano and is often associated with workshops in the orbit of Flavio Poli/Seguso Vetri d'Arte – however, a definitive attribution without a signature is not seriously possible, which is why we deliberately speak of a stylistic proximity rather than an attribution here.
The thick-walled, heavy glass and the cleanly enclosed color layers speak for high-quality production on the glassblowing island of Murano. Its compact size makes the piece versatile – as an ashtray, jewelry or key tray, or as a decorative object on a sideboard, desk, or coffee table – and can be easily combined with other Sommerso or Murano objects.
The condition is very good; no chips, cracks, or scratches are visible.
Dimensions: Leg length (tip to tip) approx. 16 cm, height approx. 6 cm.
