Murano Sommerso Geode Bowl, Ruby Red in Turquoise, 1960s
Murano Sommerso Geode Bowl, Ruby Red in Turquoise, 1960s
The first glance reveals depth: a deep ruby red that seems to glow from within the bowl, enveloped by a narrow turquoise-aquamarine layer, and on the very outside, a wafer-thin coat of crystal clear glass. This triple Sommerso layering is the true masterpiece of the Murano workshops of the 1950s and 60s — Flavio Poli received the Compasso d'Oro, Italy's most prestigious design award, in 1954 for Seguso Vetri d'Arte for precisely this technique. The three gently rolled tips that shape the bowl into a triangular geode are the iconic formal vocabulary of this era and were adopted by numerous Murano manufacturers in the 1960s.
With a diameter of 16.5 cm and a height of 7 cm, the bowl is generously sized for jewelry, keys, or small still lifes — on a coffee table, sideboard, or desk, it unfolds its full sculptural effect. It also works as a standalone color object: empty, bathed in light, it almost looks like a small gemstone. The polished base remains clean, the surface only shows the fine patina sheen to be expected from high-quality Murano glass after more than sixty years — a genuine, aged, yet undamaged collector's item in very good condition.
