Murano Sommerso Faceted Vase Graphite in Mandruzzato style, 1960s
Sculptural Murano Sommerso faceted vase in deep graphite grey, created in the Italian glass tradition of the 1960s and in the design language of the Mandruzzato workshop—that Muranese family who further developed the Sommerso technique, developed by the Flavio Poli circle, into their own signature style through the characteristic facet cut (Italian "molatura"). A teardrop-shaped, smoky dark inner core is embedded in a clear crystal mantle; the all-around polished facets catch the light in sharp prisms and make the grey core appear to shift and float depending on the viewing angle.
The square, also faceted base gives the vase stability and an architectural presence that works on any sideboard, side table, or bookshelf—solo or in a group with other Sommerso vases of different sizes and colors. At 20.5 cm high with an 8 cm diameter, it is an ideal medium vase for single blooms or as a pure sculptural object. Without a factory mark, as was customary for Muranese workshop production of the era; very good original condition without chips or scratches in the cut.
