Murano Sommerso Geode Bowl · red-opal · 1960s

Murano Sommerso Geode Bowl · red-opal · 1960s

A triangular Sommerso bowl from Murano in the iconic geode shape: three gently rolled tips with a deep, hollow depression in between. In the center, a vibrant red-orange glass core glows, embedded in a milky-opalescent casing that shimmers between white, delicate rosé, and lavender depending on the light; a thin, uranium-yellow veil flashes on the outer edges, emphasizing the layered structure. The walls are thick and heavy in the hand, and the transitions between the glass layers are clearly visible—typical characteristics of high-quality Murano Sommerso work from the 1950s and 60s. With a diameter of 16.5 cm and a height of 7 cm, the bowl is generous enough for jewelry, cigar tobacco, or small still lifes, and compact enough for a coffee table, sideboard, or desk.

The Sommerso technique ("submerged") became an international phenomenon in the 1950s through Flavio Poli at Seguso Vetri d'Arte—Poli received the Compasso d'Oro in 1954 specifically for these multi-layered glass objects. The triangular geode presented here is one of the most famous form families of this era and was adopted in variations by several Murano manufacturers in the 1960s. Without a factory label, a clear attribution to a workshop is not possible; however, the style, glass quality, and layering are clearly attributable to the Seguso/Poli school of the early 1960s. The condition is very good: no chips, no cracks, the polished base is clean, and the surface shows only the fine patina sheen to be expected from this glass quality after 60 years.
