Signed ceramic sculpture, two abstract figures, bronze patina glaze
This ceramic sculpture depicts two highly abstracted figures facing each other, rising from a shared, softly curved base: a tall, upright figure and a smaller one, which leans towards it in a sweeping arc. The small, forward-leaning heads suggest a couple or a mother and child, without fixing the motif. The design language recalls the organic modernism of mid-century sculpture, where body and space merge into one another, and the opening between the two figures is as much a part of the composition as the mass itself. At the base, the sculpture is signed "MARAGA" and dated beside it; we read the year as 2004. As we have not yet been able to reliably attribute the signature to a documented artist, we are reproducing it exactly as it appears on the object.
The surface is particularly appealing. The body is covered with a glaze in a bronze and verdigris look, composed of dark olive, cool verdigris turquoise, and warm golden ochre tones. Fine, tool-drawn lines and scratch marks follow the forms and allow lighter layers to shine through, so that at first glance the sculpture appears like patinated bronze, shifting between green, gold, and brown depending on the light. The underside reveals the hollow, unglazed body of light, beige-colored clay in two chambers, a clear indication of hand-built work.
On a sideboard, shelf, or desk, the sculpture serves as a calm, sculptural accent and fits just as well with a mid-century or vintage interior as it does with contemporary decor featuring natural materials and muted colors. It measures 26.5 cm in height, 19 cm in length, and 12 cm in width and is in very good condition.
