Gerhard Liebenthron Studio Pottery 'UFO' Vase, incised decoration, signed, Bremen, Vintage
Unusual studio pottery vase by Bremen ceramist Gerhard Liebenthron (1925–2005), who created free-form, organic unique pieces in his own workshop in Bremen's Böttcherstraße from 1952 until the 1990s. The vase offered here features the characteristic, slightly flattened UFO or mushroom shape with a narrow waist and a wide, bowl-shaped mouth – one of the more sought-after and rarer variations of his work. The body has a light, sand-colored base glaze with expressive, dark brown incised and brushed decoration and fine speckling; the interior of the mouth-bowl is glazed in deep brown to black. The piece bears Liebenthron's incised workshop signature on the underside.
Dimensions: Height approx. 10.9 cm, diameter approx. 13 cm. Condition: very good vintage condition, no chips, cracks or hairline cracks, glaze without significant signs of wear. Due to the free, handcrafted production, each of Liebenthron's pieces is unique – this compact, sculptural form is considered particularly sought-after and rare on the market.
