Tokoname-Yaki (Japan)

Tokoname Vase, square, deep blue flowing glaze, vintage Japan, 1960s/70s

Tokoname Vase, square, deep blue flowing glaze, vintage Japan, 1960s/70s

Square, slightly tapering stoneware vase with an exceptionally intense blue flowing/crystalline glaze: Almost black at the upper rim, it transitions downwards into a luminous cobalt/turquoise blue. The unglazed, ochre-colored stoneware base bears an impressed base mark identifying the vase as Tokoname-Yaki – ceramics from the Japanese pottery town of Tokoname (Aichi Prefecture), one of the "Six Ancient Kilns of Japan" with a pottery tradition spanning over 900 years.

Dimensions: approx. 5 x 5 x 15.5 cm (W x D x H)
Condition: very good vintage condition, no chips, cracks, or repairs visible; occasional, production-related light firing marks on the base (typical for this glazing technique)

A compact, colorfully very impressive collector's item of Japanese vintage ceramics – also ideal as a small Ikebana vase.
