Dirk van Sliedregt Bamboo Rattan Chair for Rohé Noordwolde · Netherlands, 1950s

Dirk van Sliedregt (1920–2010, also listed as "van Sliedrecht") is considered one of the defining figures of Dutch post-war furniture design. Furniture maker, interior designer and lecturer in one person, he taught, among others, at the Rietveld Academy and headed the Kampen Art Academy. From 1949, he began to research rattan as a furniture material — first for Gebroeders Jonkers, later also for Rohé Noordwolde. This creative period produced around 250 furniture designs that made Dutch rattan design internationally known.

Rohé Noordwolde, founded in 1919 in Noordwolde, Friesland, developed into the largest rattan manufacturer in the Netherlands. Until its closure in 1997, pieces were created there that are now considered classics of Dutch Mid-Century design. Genuine Rohé chairs can be recognized by their flowing, round rattan lines and the absence of fine reed in favor of full-bodied rattan.

This chair follows this tradition of craftsmanship. The frame is constructed from bamboo, and the seat and backrest are made of hand-woven rattan. The backrest features the characteristic curved pattern that gives the pieces their typical boho look and makes the craftsmanship of the Rietvlechter (rattan weavers) visible. Each chair in this production is unique in its subtle variations due to the manual weaving process.

Original condition from the 1950s. A documented piece of Dutch furniture design, suitable both as a solitary object in the living room or bedroom and as a sculptural seating object in lounge, gallery or studio settings.
