Bjørn Wiinblad Punch Bowl Set, Rosenthal Studio-Linie, Blue, 6 Cups, 1970s

This punch bowl set was designed by the Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) for the Rosenthal Studio-Linie and was made in Germany around 1970. For decades Wiinblad shaped the imaginative, decorative side of the Studio-Linie, and his ceramic objects are today among the sought-after works of Scandinavian-influenced post-war design. The set is complete and comprises the large lidded punch bowl, six matching footed cups and the original ladle. The base of the bowl bears the impressed mark “Rosenthal studio-linie Germany” on an unglazed medallion, and the ladle handle is stamped “Rosenthal 18/8 Germany”.

The bulbous, almost spherical bowl rests on a short foot ring and has two side handles. Shoulder and lid rim are framed by an arched frieze, while applied rosettes, flowers and circle motifs in relief are scattered across the body and stand out lighter beneath the deep blue, glossy glaze. The onion-shaped lid rises into a slender, bottle-neck finial and has a notch in its rim where the ladle rests. The cups stand on a short foot and carry a matching band of rosettes. The ladle combines a stainless steel bowl with a turned-style ceramic handle in the same glaze, its curled end doubling as a hook.

Whether for punch, sangria or mulled wine, the set is a decorative piece for the dining table or sideboard and suits a mid-century or vintage interior as well as a contemporary one. The punch bowl is 29.5 cm high with a diameter of 29.5 cm, the cups are 8.5 cm high with a diameter of 9 cm. The set is in very beautiful vintage condition. The ceramic handle of the ladle shows a fine hairline crack; the handle is firmly attached and its use is not affected. The price is for the complete set of lidded bowl, six cups and ladle. No VAT is shown.
