Åseda Glasbruk "Stubbavas" in cobalt blue, attributed to Börne Augustsson, Sweden 1950s/60s

A heavy vase of deep cobalt blue glass, rising as a slender, slightly irregular column, its entire surface covered in a powerful relief pattern. The form is based on the so-called Stubbavas, a model from the Swedish glassworks Åseda, which is also simply called "Börnevas" after master glassblower Börne Augustsson: The body is free-blown, and while the glass mass is still in motion, the glassmaker uses a special tool to press marks and grooves into the thick-walled piece. This creates the sharp-edged facets, stepped fracture edges, and rugged surfaces that resemble a broken tree stump or cracked ice – each piece turns out slightly differently. Where the glass is thicker, the blue intensifies to almost inky depths; at the protruding edges, it lightens to brilliant azure, and the top is freely shaped with softly rounded, bulging lips.

With a height of 22 cm and a base area of approximately 7 × 6.5 cm, the vase is compact enough for a shelf, windowsill, or side table and unfolds its full effect when backlit, where the relief breaks down the light refraction into countless facets. It holds a single flower just as well as nothing at all – as a pure glass object, it stands on its own. The condition is very good, without chips or cracks; manufacturing-related air bubbles and slight irregularities in the structure are part of the character of free-blown studio glass.
