Aldo Londi Table Lamp for Bitossi, Gold Luster Craquelure, Italy 1970s
Table lamp from the artistic direction of Aldo Londi for Bitossi Ceramiche, Italy, early to mid-1970s. Lamp base in a 31.5 cm wide, squat baluster shape with a flared shoulder and sharply tapered neck, total height with original cylindrical fabric shade 58 cm. The glaze is the real event: a reduction-fired gold luster crackle surface, in which bright copper gold, dark amber, and deep chocolate cracks combine to form an organic network structure that changes between warm brass and deep bronze depending on the incidence of light. In the photos, this looks almost like tectonics in miniature—grown, not painted on.
Authentic factory confirmation: in the lamp base, a paper label "Made in Italy" with the inventory number 72/3, in the Bitossi factory format of the 1970s. Original component equipment with E27 socket, textile-braided switch lead, and original cylindrical fabric shade in warm oxblood gold, whose vertical weave structure picks up and enhances the luster color of the base. Functional, very good vintage condition.
Aldo Londi (1911–2003) took over the artistic direction of Bitossi in 1946 and designed the house's most important lines there for over fifty years—from the iconic Rimini-Blu series (1959) to the experimental luster and metal glazes of the 1960s and 70s, in which he indulged his fascination for reductively fired surfaces and chromatic depth effects. Bitossi itself, founded in 1921 in Montelupo Fiorentino and listed in the Italian register of historical companies since 2014, was distributed worldwide during this period via Raymor (USA), Rosenthal Netter, and Bergboms (Sweden)—pieces from this phase accordingly bear the signature of international Mid-Century interior design.
Collector's item for living room, lounge, or library. The lamp stands unlit as a sculptural gold object; when lit, it opens up a warm light atmosphere filtered by the fabric shade. Connects to Italian and Scandinavian Mid-Century interiors as well as contemporary spaces seeking a quiet, high-quality accent.
