In the 1960s and 1970s Scheurich helped define, with bold forms and experimental glazes, the era that collectors now call Fat Lava and West German Pottery. As is usual for Scheurich, the form is impressed in the base: the numbers 242-22 give the form number and the height in centimetres, together with the origin mark W. Germany. Form 242 is one of the best-known Scheurich models and was produced over many years in numerous glaze variations; this example dates from the late 1960s or the 1970s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe cylindrical body, softly rounded towards the base, narrows at the shoulder into a short, waisted neck topped by a wide, collar-like rim that gives the form its distinctive silhouette. The glossy glaze is built up in layers: a dark chocolate brown with honey-coloured speckles on the rim, a pale speckled ochre band at the shoulder, and below it a deep olive to coffee brown that runs in reddish-brown and copper-toned drips along an irregular wavy line over the sand-beige, finely speckled lower part. The interior is glazed dark brown, and the underside is glazed brown, leaving the pale clay visible at the foot ring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOn a sideboard, shelf or windowsill, the vase brings warm earth tones to a mid-century interior and sits just as well in a collection of West German ceramics as in a calm, natural setting; with a few branches, grasses or dried flowers the compact form shows to particular advantage. Small glaze dots and variations in the drips are inherent to the firing and are not damage.
