murano-sommerso-schale-aquablau-gruen-27-cm-1960er
Murano Sommerso bowl, aqua blue & green, 27 cm, 1960s

This sculptural bowl of mouth-blown art glass comes from Murano and was presumably made in the 1960s, when sommerso bowls shaped freely at the furnace were among the most sought-after works of the Venetian glass island. In the sommerso technique, made famous above all by Flavio Poli at Seguso Vetri d’Arte, coloured glass layers are “submerged” in thick, clear crystal glass so that the colour seems to glow from within; the combination of aqua blue and yellow-green is one of the classic colour schemes of the period. There is no label or signature on this piece, which is why no specific glassworks or designer is named; the form, technique and colour scheme do, however, correspond to the Murano sommerso bowls known on the international collector's market.

From a round, slightly recessed base, sturdy, sculpturally applied glass ribs radiate outward and end in four widely drawn-out, upward-curving corners. Viewed from above, this creates a four-pointed star shape, and from the side an elegant, almost floating silhouette. A luminous core in light aqua and sky blue lies beneath a layer of clear glass, traversed by fresh yellow-green colour trails along the ribs; at the edges the blue deepens into a rich turquoise and ultramarine, and depending on the light the bowl plays with reflections like water.

As a fruit bowl, catch-all or purely decorative object, it shows its full effect against the light on a sideboard, dining table or windowsill and fits into a mid-century interior just as well as a modern, minimalist setting. The thick-walled glass has a noticeable weight and shows the fine tool marks of free shaping, including occasional small air bubbles typical of hand-formed glass. It measures 27 cm in diameter and 11 cm in height and is in very good condition.
