heiner-hans-koerting-vase-kristallglasur-blau-schwarz-dornburg
Heiner Hans Körting vase, blue crystalline glaze on black, Dornburg, 1960s/70s

This vase is a work by Heiner-Hans Körting (1911–1991), one of the most influential ceramicists of the post-war period in East Germany. On the base, it bears his impressed stamp, the monogram "HK" with the H inside the K. Born in Munich, Körting trained in his parents' ceramic workshops in Oranienburg, studied at the Keramische Fachschule in Höhr-Grenzhausen and at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts in Berlin, and took over the pottery in the Marstall of Dornburg an der Saale in 1949. This workshop, which had belonged to master potter Max Krehan, was the site from which the Bauhaus ceramic workshop emerged in 1920; it was most recently managed by Otto Lindig. Körting led it for over four decades until his death, giving it a new identity with his distinctive, contemporary vessels. Today, his works are represented in collections including the Keramik-Museum Bürgel and the Keramik-Museum Berlin.

The form is clear and tranquil: an egg-shaped, slightly elongated body that tapers towards the shoulder into a short, cylindrical neck with a gently flared rim. Its effect lies entirely in the glaze. Over a deep black, high-gloss base, countless fine, needle-like crystals in cobalt and ultramarine blue grow, becoming denser towards the base where they merge into a velvety, almost solid blue zone. Crystalline glazes only form under precisely controlled firing and slow cooling, making each piece unique. Development of these glazes was specifically pursued in the Dornburg workshop in the early 1970s, making this vase a rather rare type of glaze within Körting's body of work. The unglazed foot ring reveals the blue-grey tinted clay body typical of Körting.

As a hand-thrown unique piece, the vase is a small collector's item for a shelf, display cabinet, or sideboard. It suits a collection of vintage studio pottery and Bauhaus legacy pieces just as well as it fits into a minimalist, modern interior, whether as a standalone piece or for a single stem. It measures 12.5 cm in height with a diameter of 7 cm and is in very good condition.
